What is a pressure gauge?

pressure gaugeA pressure gauge is a measuring instrument for pressure in a certain medium, in an enclosed space, relative to atmospheric pressure. Different kinds of circumstances ask for different kinds of pressure gauges for measuring pressure difference, excess pressure, or negative pressure. Those measurements are crucially important: differential pressure, excess pressure and negative pressure may cause (serious) damage. This may not only lead to high cost; it can even be dangerous in certain situations. Therefore, a reliable measuring instrument (a pressure gauge) is essential.

How does a pressure gauge work?

The main purpose of a pressure gauge is controlling the pressure in a certain medium relative to the atmospheric pressure. If it maintains equal, the mechanism will stay in balance and it will not deform or change. When pressure increases or decreases, the indicating needle on the display will start to move respectively to the right or left. The two most commonly used pressure gauges are Bourdon gauges, and diaphragm gauges. They each have their own operating mechanism and application. On this page, we explain how a pressure gauge works.

Which pressure gauge do you need?

It is not always easy to choose the right pressure gauge; there are many factors that need to be considered, such as:

  • Pressure range;
  • Pressure unit (bar or psi);
  • Environment (temperature, humidity, etc.);
  • The type of medium (corrosive, viscous, polluted);
  • Etc.

In a normal environment, where no vibrations or pressure surges occur, the temperature is stable and within “normal” values (not extremely high or low), and the medium is neither corrosive, viscous nor polluted, a dry steel or plastic pressure gauge will suffice perfectly. Glycerine filled pressure gauges are suitable for circumstances in which the needle must be stabilized and the mechanism needs protection from damage by surges or vibrations. Are you not sure which pressure gauge you need? We are happy to give you our advice; please contact us without any further obligations.

Mounting, revision, and reparation

It is very important that your pressure gauge is checked periodically. That way, you can be sure that your manometer is working correctly and you avoid any problems. You can also turn to EMVO Techniek for pressure gauge mounting, revision, and reparation. We are glad to be of service. Do you wish to personalize your pressure gauge with an imprint, for example, your logo? Tell us what you need, we can arrange for your personal imprint.
