Graduations for analog room thermometers

Our analog room thermometers usually have a graduation in degrees Celsius (ºC), which is the most commonly used scale in the Netherlands. But besides of this graduation, named after the Swedish astronomer Anders Celcius, several others are in use:

  • Kelvin (K). This graduation is derived from the graduation of Celsius, but it's zero point is different. Thermodynamic temperature is indicated by the Kelvin unit. The zero point of Kelvin is roughly 237 degrees Celsius below the zero point of the graduation of Celsius.
  • Fahrenheit (ºF). This unit is commonly used in English speaking countries. Fahrenheit established this graduation in the year 1724 and his first calibration point was the temperature of melting ice: 32ºF. His second calibration point was the temperature of a healty person: 96ºF. It is easy to place the 64 units that are in between those two calibration points onto a scale, because the distance can simply be cut in half 6 times. If we want to convert Fahrenheit into Celsius, we should deduct 32 degrees and divide the result by 1,8.

Other graduations, such as Rankine and Réaumur, are also posible, but not very commonly used anymore.
